Tags are a powerful way to organize reports and look at data in DYB. By default, Reports in DYB load with the current Annual Cohort Tag, which includes students who have exited your program from October 1st through September 30th. The Cohort Year tag is important for looking at your YouthBuild program’s Affiliated Network outcomes, but there are many other ways that DYB and tags look at data for different groups of students. It is easy to change what groups of students are included in default Affiliated Network Reports by using the Tag Picker.
To open the Tag Picker, click on Add additional tags or Filter report by tags at the top of any individual Report in DYB.
When adding tags, you can choose Student Data Tags or My Tags, which are the tags created by you or members of your team. Learn more about types of Tags.
Clicking on the Student Data Tags folder reveals eight category folders housing over 350 tags total! You can filter by virtually any DYB data point you can think of – sex, credential earned, Annual Cohort year and more.
Categories are essentially organized by DYB data entry pages for easy navigation. Each tag you click on will be added to the filter above.
One thing to keep in mind is that currently all tags in the filter are jointly applied (i.e.: “AND” not “or”). For example a report filter of Sex: Female with Certificate: NCCER would filter the report by students who are both female AND have earned their NCCER.
An Example
The best way to illustrate the how the Tag Picker can filter a report is with an example.
Let’s answer this question – Looking at last year’s exited students, what was the job placement rate of those who attained an industry recognized certificate?
To do this, choose Reports from the Program menu, and then click on View Details underneath the Placement Report dial.
The Placement Report opens. By default, the report is pre-populated for students tagged Cohort 2014-15 (exited students during that year), which is how the Affiliated Network evaluates Placement. This is one of the tags we need, so we can leave that there.
Next we need to add the tag that refers to the certificate attainment we are looking for. Click Add additional tags to open the Tag Picker. Navigate through the folders by clicking Student Data Tags > Certificates. You can see the folder path at the top of the list.
Then click on Industry Recognized > Yes. The tag appears at the top next to the Cohort tag.
Now click Close Tag Picker.
You can see the results of our Report filtering.
It appears the students in our program had a higher job placement rate (67%) when they had an industry recognized certificate versus the just the placement rate of all of our students (50%, visible in the original screenshot above).
Explore On Your Own
The best way to learn the Tag Picker’s capacity to filter reports is to try it yourself and play around. Here are a few examples for you to try:
- What is the certificate attainment rate of active students in your program? (Filtering reports by active students is a good way to check your data entry!)
- What was the percentage of last year’s Annual Cohort who gained two grade levels in math who earned a construction certificate?
- What is the HSE/Diploma attainment rate for females versus males who have ever attended your program?
- What was the education placement rate of last year’s Annual Cohort who completed a FAFSA?
