Barista Training:  Barista training is an 8-10 week training that some YouthBuild Affiliates are funded to offer their students. You should only add this activity if your program participates. Students who complete this training are awarded a Customer Service Excellence Training (CSET) Certificate. In partnership with Starbucks and Schultz Family Foundation. 

Bridge Program:  A program that assists students in their transition into a post-secondary education (PSE) institution.

Building Performance Institute (BPI):  "BPI develops standards for energy efficiency retrofit work using an open, transparent, consensus-based process built on sound building science. From these standards, we develop professional certifications for individuals, companywide credentials for BPI GoldStar Contractors, home energy rating systems and quality assurance services that help raise the bar in home performance contracting." C
Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA): 
A certification whose recipients usually work in hospitals or nursing homes assisting individuals who are unable to care for themselves. Requirements for certification vary by state but often require taking an accredited course, passing an exam and having a certain amount of experience.

Commercial Driver's License (CDL):  A type of driver's license that is required for individuals operating vehicles such as busses, tractor trailers and tow trucks, etc.

Cohort Year: A YouthBuild USA Cohort Year runs from October 1 through September 30 of the following year. YouthBuild USA evaluates the Affiliated Network’s outcomes each year based on the students who leave their YouthBuild programs, successful or otherwise, during that 12 month period. In DYB any student that leaves your program will be automatically assigned a cohort year based on their exit date.

CPR / First Aid:  A Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) / First Aid is a certification received through taking a first aid training course.

Customer Service Excellence Training (CSET) Certificate:  Students who participate in Barista Training may earn this certificate at the end of the training. You should only add this certificate if you program offers Barista Training. The CSET certificate is not an Industry Recognized credential.

D
Developmental Education Courses:  Non-credit bearing courses delivered by a post-secondary institution that are focused on advancing un-prepared students' literacy or math skills. Also known as remedial courses, developmental ed and dev ed.

Direct Grant:  A grant that is given directly to a YouthBuild program from the original funder, such as a DOL YouthBuild grant or a HUD YouthBuild grant.

Driver's License:  An official document that states that an individual may operate a motorized vehicle without supervision. Requirements vary by state.

Dual Enrollment:  A program that allows students to enroll in college courses for credit prior to high school graduation/program completion.

E
Economically Disadvantaged:  
Receiving or meeting the income eligibility requirements to receive: TANF, Food Stamps (SNAP), Medicaid, SCHIP, Section 8 housing assistance.

Energy Star Rated Home: A home that has earned the ENERGY STAR label has undergone a process of inspections, testing, and verification to meet strict requirements set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), delivering better quality, better comfort, and better durability. Verification of a home's energy efficiency by a third-party organization is mandatory for earning the ENERGY STAR label. An ENERGY STAR certified home is not a home that simply includes ENERGY STAR rated appliances. English Language Learner (ELL):  Students who are unable to communicate fluently or learn effectively in English, who often come from non-English-speaking homes and backgrounds, and who typically require specialized or modified instruction in both the English language and in their academic courses.

F
FAFSA:  Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is completed yearly during the time in which an individual is attending or is planning to attend a post secondary educational institution. The FAFSA must be completed in order to receive Federal Grants, Loans and Work Study to help to pay for post secondary education.

First Generation Enrollee:  An individual who, if attending a post secondary educational institution, is the first in their family to attend (i.e. neither of their parents attended).

Foster Care:  The system in which a minor has/had been placed into a ward, group home or private home of a state-certified caregiver referred to as a "foster parent."

Foundational Certificate:  A certificate that does not meet the standard of other industry recognized certificates but recognizes other achievements such as earning a driver’s license, CPR/first-aid training, etc.

G
Green Job:
Those jobs held by employees who devote a substantial share of work hours to activities that boost energy efficiency, increase the supply of renewable energy, or prevent, reduce, or clean up pollution. According to the U.N. Environment Program, green jobs are those that "work in agricultural, manufacturing, research and development, administrative, & service activities that contribute substantially to preserving or restoring environmental quality." For example: Green Home Construction, rehabilitation, energy auditing, weatherization installation; Green/Cool roof installation & sales; Renewable Energy manufacturing, sales and installations – Solar PV, SolarThermal, Wind, Geo-thermal, etc; Organic farming – or working at a farmers market; Sustainable landscaping; Recycling & reuse/resale; Land conservation/forestry; Cleaning services that use eco friendly products

Group Mentoring Match:  An activity that involves mentoring with groups of students rather that one-on-one mentoring.

H
HAZMAT:  A certificate which stands for Hazardous Materials that is required of individuals who handle and/or transport materials that are dangerous to the environment.

HBI PACT:  Pre-Apprenticeship Certificate Training (PACT) is offered by the Home Builders Institute (HBI) and contains academic and vocational training so that, upon certification, participants are qualified for entry-level positions in carpentry, plumbing and weatherization, etc.

Home Health Aide (HHA):  An individual who helps people who are disabled, chronically ill or in need of assistance for other reasons. There are no formal educational requirements to have this job but formal training and standardized tests may be required depending on the employer, agency and/or location.

Homeless:  Lacking a fixed, regular and adequate nighttime residence. This may include individuals living in a publicly or privately operated shelter, or individuals forced to stay with a series of friends and/or extended family members.

I
Individual Mentoring Match:  A mentoring relationship between one student and one mentor.

Internship:  A temporary professional position which emphasizes gaining practical experience and professional development skills. These positions may be paid, but are often unpaid and are viewed as an entryway into a specific career path.

L
LGBTQ:  Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer/Questioning (LGBTQ) is used to refer to anyone who is non-heterosexual or non-cisgender.

M
Mental Toughness 2 (MT2):
 An intensive two-week bridge program experience that focuses on preparing YouthBuild students for successful transition into college, career and community leadership pathways. For more information, visit http://www.mentaltoughness2.com. *Note this is a second round of Mental Toughness later in a student's enrollment that occurs in addition to the first round that serves as orientation.

Multi Craft Core Curriculum (MCCC):  A 120 hour curriculum created by the Building Trades Department of the AFL-CIO for those currently working with or who want to work with the building trades in their area.

National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER):  A Non-profit organization with the goals of developing a safe and productive construction and maintenance workforce by creating standardized training and credentialing programs.

National Service Placement: Examples of National Service Placement include NCCC, AmeriCorps VISTA, AmeriCorps Full-Time Service Opportunities with Public Allies, City Year, Habitat for Humanity, Community HealthCorps, YouthBuild, Corps Network, etc. Members are considered volunteers and receive a stipend for their efforts. 

O
OSHA 10:
 A 10 hour construction training course to provide entry level construction workers with the knowledge to recognize and prevent hazards on a construction site. This certification is often required by employers.

P
Passthrough Grant:  A grant that is given to a YouthBuild program by YouthBuild USA such as the AmeriCorps grant. Passthrough grants may be public or private.

Personal Care Assistant (PCA):  Also known as caregivers, this is a person who is hired to help with housekeeping, grocery shopping, bathing of an individual, etc. who is not capable of doing so themselves. They cannot provide medical services but can administer medication. There is often training required to become a Personal Care Assistant.

Policy Committee Member:  A YouthBuild student or recent graduate who is a member of your policy committee.

Policy Committee:  A working committee or comparable process by which students receive experience in program governance and participate in significant decision making that affects the YouthBuild program.

Primary Caregiver:  A person who takes primary responsibility for someone who cannot care fully for themselves.

T
Trade School:  An educational institution that teaches specific skills required for certain careers or jobs. Some career fields that require attending trade school are: Construction Management, Nursing, Cosmetology, Culinary Arts and Commercial Truck Driving. Trade school is also known as vocational school or technical school.
